The storefront shutter conversation gets most of my time. It’s the visible install, it’s the one insurance carriers ask about, it’s the one owners think about first. But there’s a second product that handles a different problem entirely, and a smaller share of owners ever ask me about it directly.
Polycarbonate sheeting inside display cases. It sits between the customer and the high-value inventory during business hours. It’s not visible from the street. It doesn’t replace a shutter. It solves the daytime grab-and-run problem that an overnight shutter can’t touch.
Here’s the product decision in plain terms — when it’s the right install, when it isn’t, and what to spec if you decide to put it in.
What’s the daytime threat that polycarbonate is actually for?
The grab-and-run. Two or three people enter the store during business hours, identify the highest-value display, smash the glass on the case, take the inventory in under thirty seconds, and leave through the front door before the staff can react.
This isn’t an overnight threat. It happens at noon, at 4 p.m., at any moment when the store is open and the inventory is sitting in a case behind ordinary tempered glass. The shutter is up because the store is open. The alarm doesn’t fire because the front door wasn’t forced. The cameras catch the event, but the inventory is already gone.
The product that prevents this isn’t a shutter. It’s a clear sheet of polycarbonate mounted to the inside of the display case, between the glass and the inventory. The glass still breaks if someone hits it with a hammer. The polycarbonate underneath doesn’t. The would-be grab is now a five-minute prying problem in front of a full store. The attacker leaves without the inventory.
When is polycarbonate the right install?
Three conditions need to be true for the spec to make sense.
The inventory is visible to customers during business hours and concentrated in a finite number of cases. Jewelry stores, pawn shops with watch and jewelry displays, optometry with premium frames, electronics retailers with high-end devices in countertop cases, cannabis dispensaries with flower or concentrate displays. Anywhere the inventory is in a case the customer can see but isn’t supposed to touch.
The case glass is currently ordinary tempered glass or single-layer laminated glass. Most retail display cases are built with tempered glass because it’s cheap and because the threat model the case manufacturer designed against was “accidental impact,” not “intentional smash.” That glass takes one hammer blow and the inventory is exposed. The polycarbonate install assumes that glass.
The grab-and-run is a realistic threat for your category and location. Jewelry districts, downtown high-traffic corridors, dispensaries near transit, optometry shops in walkable retail blocks. The threat is concentrated in specific geographies and verticals. A jewelry case in a small-town main-street shop with low foot traffic has a lower realistic threat than the same case on a high-volume downtown corridor.
If all three apply, polycarbonate inside the case is one of the highest-return security spends per dollar I’ve seen. If one of the three doesn’t apply, the install is probably premature.
What spec actually goes in?
Polycarbonate sheeting cut to fit the inside dimensions of the case, mounted to the inside surface of the glass with a clear adhesive or to the case frame with concealed brackets. Thickness is the spec variable that matters most.
Standard spec for retail display cases. A quarter-inch polycarbonate is the entry-level spec. It defeats a casual smash with a fist or a small hammer. It’s adequate for most low-threat installs.
Higher-threat spec for jewelry and high-end watch displays. A half-inch polycarbonate, sometimes a multi-ply build. Defeats a sustained attack with a larger tool. This is the spec I’d quote a jewelry store on the highest-value cases.
Very high-threat spec for sustained-attack scenarios. A three-quarter-inch polycarbonate or a multi-ply build with bonded layers. Rare in commercial retail. Mostly seen in cash-handling counters at banks and credit unions, or in specific high-value collector displays at auction houses and private galleries. Not typically necessary for a normal retail case.
The install is invisible once it’s in. The polycarbonate sits flush against the inside of the glass. Customers see the inventory the same way they did before. The case looks identical. The change only shows up when something tries to break the glass.
Where do owners get this wrong?
Three failure modes.
Speccing polycarbonate as a substitute for a storefront shutter. It isn’t one. Polycarbonate inside a case is daytime protection. The shutter is overnight protection. The two products solve different problems and you don’t trade one for the other. Owners who install polycarbonate and skip the shutter cover the daytime grab-and-run but leave the overnight smash-and-loot completely unprotected.
Speccing one polycarbonate thickness across all cases. The cases that hold the highest-value-per-square-foot inventory want a higher spec than the cases that hold mid-tier inventory. A jewelry store’s loose-diamond case probably wants a half-inch or thicker. The same store’s costume jewelry case can be a quarter-inch or sometimes nothing. The spec should follow the inventory schedule of each case.
Forgetting that the glass still breaks. The polycarbonate doesn’t prevent the glass from breaking. It prevents the inventory from being taken. The case will still need glass replacement after an attempted grab. The polycarbonate install changes the math from “case broken, inventory gone” to “case broken, inventory intact” — which is almost always the right trade, but owners sometimes get surprised by the broken-glass cleanup the morning after a foiled attack.
What should you do right now if you’re considering polycarbonate?
One — count your high-value cases and rank them by inventory exposure. Not every case needs polycarbonate. The one or two cases that hold the highest-value-per-square-foot inventory are the ones that need it first. Lower-value cases can be staged on a longer install timeline or skipped entirely.
Two — get the spec from someone who’s installed the product, not just sold it. Polycarbonate thickness, mounting method, and clear-adhesive choice all affect how the install performs over years. The installer should be able to point at past jobs in your category and describe what they spec’d and why. If the answer is generic (“we use a quarter-inch for everything”), get a second opinion.
Three — install in conjunction with a documented insurance conversation. Polycarbonate inside high-value cases is the kind of install that insurance carriers reward when documented properly. Same as a storefront shutter install. Document the spec, the case-by-case install map, and the install date. Send a copy to the carrier or broker the week of install. The insurance benefit is incremental but real.
Questions case owners ask after reading this
Does polycarbonate yellow or cloud over time? Modern commercial-grade polycarbonate with a UV coating holds clarity for years under normal retail lighting. Cheap polycarbonate without the coating yellows noticeably within two to three years. Spec the UV-coated grade and the case stays clear for the life of the install.
Can I install polycarbonate myself, or do I need a professional? Cut-to-fit polycarbonate is technically a DIY-capable install for a confident owner. In practice the cases I see done well are professional installs with proper adhesive and clean edge work. The cost difference between DIY and professional is small relative to the risk of an install that ages poorly or peels at the edges.
What about laminated glass instead of polycarbonate — same effect? Laminated glass solves part of the same problem but at a higher cost, a heavier install, and with a different failure mode (laminated glass holds together when struck but the inventory is exposed if the attacker pushes through). For most retail display-case installs, polycarbonate is the better spec. Laminated glass makes more sense for full storefront installs where weight and structural integration matter.
How long does the install take? Most polycarbonate display-case installs go in over half a day to a full day on site, depending on how many cases need to be addressed. A single high-value case is usually a two-to-three-hour install. A full jewelry or optometry shop with six to ten cases is typically a one-day install. The store doesn’t need to close — the install happens around the existing case content and the customer flow keeps running through it.
